Blue Jays acquire José Berríos from Twins for Austin Martin, Simeon Woods Richardson
Blue Jays bolster rotation with Berríos deal
The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired right-handed pitcher José Berríos from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for top prospects Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson, the teams announced Friday.
Berríos, 27, is a two-time All-Star who has established himself as one of the most consistent starting pitchers in baseball.
The Blue Jays have been in need of a frontline starter since Hyun Jin Ryu went down with a season-ending forearm injury in May.
Martin, Woods Richardson headed to Minnesota
Martin, 22, is the Blue Jays' No. 2 prospect and was considered one of the top hitting prospects in baseball.
Woods Richardson, 21, is the Blue Jays' No. 5 prospect and is considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball.
The Twins are getting two of the Blue Jays' top prospects in return for Berríos, but they are also taking on a significant amount of salary.
Berríos is owed $12.6 million this season and is arbitration-eligible next year.
Berríos a key addition for Blue Jays
The Blue Jays are hoping that Berríos can help them compete for a playoff spot this season.
The Blue Jays are currently in third place in the American League East, 5.5 games behind the first-place New York Yankees.
Berríos is expected to make his Blue Jays debut on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox.
