What is CURP and How to Get It? (Nueva CURP)
What is CURP?
CURP (Clave Única de Registro de Población) is a unique 18-character alphanumeric code used to identify Mexican citizens and foreign residents in Mexico. It was created in 1996 as part of the National Population Registry (RNP), a comprehensive database containing personal information of all Mexicans and foreigners living in the country.
The CURP is essential for accessing various public and private services in Mexico, including healthcare, education, employment, and financial transactions. It is also used to verify identity and prevent fraud.
How to Get a CURP
Mexican citizens can obtain their CURP through the following methods:
- Online: Visit the RENAPO website (https://www.gob.mx/curp/) and complete the online application form.
- In person: Go to any authorised CURP registration office (such as the National Population Registry office or a Mexican consulate abroad) and present your original birth certificate or passport.
Foreigners residing in Mexico can obtain a CURP by presenting their passport and proof of legal residency (such as an FM3 visa) at an authorised CURP registration office.
Nueva CURP
In 2018, the Mexican government introduced a new version of the CURP known as "Nueva CURP". The Nueva CURP features several improvements over the original version, including:
- Enhanced security measures to prevent identity theft
- Inclusion of additional personal information (such as place of birth and parents' names)
- Use of a more user-friendly format
How to Get a Nueva CURP
Mexican citizens born after 2018 will automatically receive a Nueva CURP assigned by RENAPO. If you are a Mexican citizen born before 2018 and wish to upgrade to the Nueva CURP, you can do so by following these steps:
- Visit the RENAPO website (https://www.gob.mx/curp/).
- Click on the "Actualización de CURP" link.
- Complete the online application form and submit it.
Once you have submitted your application, RENAPO will review your information and issue you a new CURP, which will be sent to your email address.
